The first 10 days are the calmest and cheapest, the middle 10 balance atmosphere and cost, and the last 10 nights carry Laylatul Qadr along with the highest prices and tightest availability. Decide this before anything else.
Travellers may postpone fasts, but many pilgrims prefer to fast throughout. Choose flight times that let you break your fast on the ground where possible, hydrate heavily during suhoor, and expect the first 48 hours to feel harder than the rest of the trip.
If you intend to perform I'tikaf in the last 10 nights, you need a hotel within a few minutes of the Haram, a room that someone else can manage while you are in the masjid, and a realistic plan for meals. We flag which hotels genuinely support this.
