Haramain Train: Makkah to Madinah Guide

The Haramain train can be part of an Umrah itinerary, but a train ticket is only one part of the journey. Compare the station-to-station timetable with transfers from your hotel, baggage rules and the time you need to reach the platform.

Choose the right stations before booking

Use the official Haramain booking site at https://sar.hhr.sa to select origin, destination and date. Makkah station and Madinah station are not hotel entrances; airport or Jeddah station choices are not interchangeable. Check the exact station shown on the ticket, particularly if travelling directly after a flight. Read our Makkah to Madinah transport guide when comparing a train journey with a road transfer.

How to book a workable journey

Search your date on the official site or app, select the train and class, then check the passenger details and conditions before payment. Read your fare’s change and refund rules rather than assuming all tickets are flexible. Save the confirmation and ticket, and follow the current identification and boarding instructions. An agency package does not automatically include train tickets unless your written itinerary says so.

Economy or business class

Compare the fare and published features for the service you are booking. A higher class does not remove the need to check luggage, accessibility, station transfers or ticket conditions. If you are travelling with children or need assistance, confirm the arrangements directly rather than assuming a seat upgrade includes personal care or priority support.

Baggage: the train allowance is not your flight allowance

The official HHR baggage guidance reviewed for this article allows one suitcase up to 25 kg and 65 × 55 × 35 cm, plus a small piece of hand luggage such as a backpack or handbag. Recheck the current policy before paying, especially if your airline allows more. Oversized baggage can create a problem at the station; do not assume you can buy your way around the limit.

  • Measure the suitcase including its overall dimensions before travel.
  • Check each passenger’s allowance and the rules for any additional or special items.
  • Ask about mobility aids separately; do not treat them as an ordinary suitcase.
  • Use a transfer option that fits your luggage if the rail allowance does not.

Compare door-to-door time, not a promised journey duration

Use the actual timetable for your date instead of a permanent two-hour or six-hour comparison. Add the hotel-to-station journey, arrival before boarding and the onward transfer to your next hotel. Check when your room will be ready at the destination. If a train and flight are booked separately, leave a realistic margin; a missed connection is not automatically protected.

When a private transfer may work better

A road transfer may suit travellers with larger luggage, a particular mobility requirement or a hotel-to-hotel schedule. Private does not automatically mean wheelchair-accessible: confirm the vehicle, boarding assistance and luggage capacity. Ask for a quote comparing the whole train option with a private transfer, including station taxis or pickups and the cancellation terms.
