How to Perform Umrah Step by Step: A Simple Guide for UK Pilgrims

When families call us before their first Umrah, the same worry comes up: "What if I get something wrong?" The good news is that Umrah itself is short and simple. It has four core acts — ihram, tawaf, sa'i, and shaving or trimming the hair — and most pilgrims complete them in a few hours. This guide walks through each step in order. For detailed rulings on your own situation, always ask a qualified scholar you trust.

Step 1: Enter ihram before the miqat

Ihram is the sacred state you enter with the intention (niyyah) of Umrah. Flying from the UK, you pass the miqat in the air before landing in Jeddah, so most pilgrims change at home or at the airport and make the intention on the plane when the crew announces the miqat. If you are going to Madinah first, you enter ihram later, at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), on the way to Makkah.

  • Men: two plain, unstitched white sheets; women: ordinary modest clothing, face and hands uncovered
  • Make the intention: "Labbayka Allahumma 'Umrah"
  • Recite the talbiyah often until you begin tawaf
  • Avoid the restrictions of ihram: perfume, cutting hair or nails, and marital relations

Step 2: Tawaf around the Kaaba

On reaching Masjid al-Haram, enter with your right foot and the dua for entering the mosque. Tawaf is seven anti-clockwise circuits of the Kaaba, starting and ending at the line of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). You need wudu for tawaf. Men uncover the right shoulder (idtiba) and walk briskly in the first three circuits (raml) where the crowd allows.

  • Begin each circuit facing the Black Stone, raise your right hand and say "Allahu Akbar"
  • There is no fixed dua for each circuit — make dua in any language
  • Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, many recite "Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah…"
  • After seven circuits, pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim or anywhere in the mosque, then drink Zamzam

Step 3: Sa'i between Safa and Marwah

Sa'i commemorates Hajar's search for water for her son Isma'il. Start at Safa, face the Kaaba and make dua, then walk to Marwah — that is one lap. Marwah back to Safa is the second. Seven laps finish at Marwah. Men jog lightly between the green lights. The entire route is indoors and air-conditioned, and wheelchairs and electric carts are available for elderly pilgrims.

Step 4: Halq or taqsir — shaving or trimming

Men either shave the head (halq, which is more rewarded) or trim the hair evenly all over (taqsir). Women trim a fingertip's length from the end of their hair. With this, your Umrah is complete and the restrictions of ihram are lifted. There are barbers just outside the Marwah exit.

Common mistakes we see — and how to avoid them

Most problems are practical, not religious. Keep your hotel card and phone charged, agree a meeting point in case your group gets separated, and avoid peak crowds after Isha if you have elderly relatives with you.

  • Passing the miqat without intention — set a phone reminder for the announcement
  • Starting tawaf in the wrong place — always begin at the Black Stone line
  • Counting laps wrongly — use a simple tally counter
  • Trimming just a few hairs — trim from the whole head

Ihram and the Rituals of Umrah

What are the main steps of Umrah?

The main rites involve entering Ihram with the intention of Umrah, performing Tawaf around the Ka'bah, performing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and shaving or trimming the hair to complete the rites. Pilgrims should learn the sequence before travel and seek qualified religious guidance if uncertain. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's official Umrah and Visit Guide (haj.gov.sa) gives an overview.Guide to performing Umrah

Where should I enter Ihram when flying from the UK or Ireland?

A person intending to perform Umrah must enter Ihram before crossing the applicable Miqat. The timing depends on the flight route and itinerary. Prepare in advance and ask a qualified scholar or knowledgeable group leader if you are unsure when to make the intention.Guide to performing Umrah

Do I have to touch or kiss the Black Stone during Tawaf?

The ruling depends on which act was missed, whether it was an essential rite or an obligation, and what happened afterwards. Do not assume that every mistake requires a sacrifice. Explain the exact circumstances to a qualified scholar.Guide to performing Umrah

Nusuk and Rawdah Permits

Do I need a permit to visit the Rawdah in Madinah?

A booked Rawdah permit is required. Check available appointments in Nusuk for each traveller; a hotel booking or visa does not reserve a slot. Read our guide to how to perform Umrah for planning your Madinah visit.Visa and permit guidance

When are Rawdah slots released and how often can I visit?

Use the availability and eligibility shown in your Nusuk account. Release times and repeat-visit rules can change, so do not rely on a fixed weekly release day or an old visit limit. Check nusuk.sa before making travel plans around a particular appointment.Visa and permit guidance
